2016 Willie Headley Service Award

The Black Mountain Beautification Committee recently presented the 2016 Willie Headley Service Award to Mary Werner.

This is the fifth year the Beautification Committee has honored one of its members with this annual award named in memory of the founding Beautification Committee member Willie Headley.

The plaque states that the award is presented to a member

who shares Headley's energy and vision for a more beautiful

Black Mountain.

Previous recipients include Maggie Krogh, Mary Leonard

White, Joyce Black-Woerz and Susan Chabot.  Werner

is a tireless behind-the-scenes worker who makes

everything run more smoothly.

From being an officer of the committee, to maintaining town garden sites, to helping to create the Beautification Committee's brochure, to creating works of art for the annual Clothes Line sale at the Garden Show, Werner spruces up whatever is the committee's current project.

With an eye for detail and beauty Werner, along with Joyce Ackerman, created two works of whimsy that welcome visitors to Black Mountain in the fall.  Rocky and Rockette, the town's favorite scarecrows, will once again be returning for Halloween.  Be on the lookout, there may be more.
